IAG CO2 Emissions Independently Verified by IBA Carbon Emissions Calculator

We compared CO2 emissions data published by IAG to IBA's InsightIQ Carbon Emissions Calculator, identifying a close correlation between the results.

We compared annual sustainability results published by International Airlines Group 'IAG' in 2018 and 2019 to CO2 emissions data from our aviation Carbon Emissions Calculator, identifying a close relationship and small percentage variance between the results. Recent comparisons of CEC data with operator results at Ryanair and Wizz Air show similarly high levels of accuracy. Our analysis covers the 4 largest IAG airline operators; British Airways, Iberia, Vueling and Aer Lingus.

CO2 emissions data from InsightIQ's CEC was on average accurate to operator figures with an average variance of just 1.28% in 2018 and 2019.

IBA's newly launched Carbon Emissions Index also highlights a trend of overall CO2 emissions reduction at IAG. The group achieved a 12.3% reduction in carbon emissions across the entire fleet between 2019 and 2021 on a per-seat per-mile 'PSPM' basis. This represents a strong performance compared to a global CO2 reduction of 2.3% in the same period. British Airways should be individually highlighted for realising a 26.2% reduction in CO2 emissions on transatlantic flights, making BA the second most improved airline globally.

We also recently published a short working example of our Carbon Emissions Calculator in action by analysing the CO2 emissions profile of the Qatar Airways widebody fleet, and how understanding the context behind such data provides useful, meaningful intelligence.

Using the metric of CO2 per-seat per-mile or kilometre, the CEC provides a meaningful measure of aviation carbon efficiency across operators, fleets and aircraft types. Our CEC's model applies aggregated load factors based on a typical operational year; subscribers can verify aircraft fuel efficiency over different distances, load factors and seat layouts.

IBA's InsightIQ analysis platform flexibly illustrates multiple asset, fleet and market positions, actual and potential, to inform client choices and identify acquisition opportunities. Immediate access to crucial aircraft, engine, lease rate and fleet data eases appreciation of historic and future aircraft concentrations and operator profiles.
