Global Airline Passenger Capacity to Surpass 2019 Levels in October, IBA Predicts

IBA’s latest Aviation Industry Barometer predicts that global passenger ASKs (available seat kilometres) will surpass 2019 levels by October 2023, having reached 95% of pre-pandemic ASKs in June 2023.

IBA Insight, IBA’s aviation intelligence platform, shows that in June:

 

  • Although monthly global passenger capacity reached 95% of pre-pandemic ASKs in June 2023, this is a fall of -1% compared to May 2023.

  • In June, operators from Africa, North and Latin America surpassed pre-pandemic capacity, while operators in APAC, Europe and the Middle East lag slightly behind, albeit recovering steadily.

  • Passenger ASKs from Chinese operators are trending at 89% of 2019 levels, a steady increase from 82% at the end of Q1 2023.

  • In June 2023, 2.82 million commercial passenger flights were recorded compared to 2.81 million in May 2023, and 2.41 million flights in June 2022.

  • 388k commercial passenger flights were recorded by Chinese operators, compared to 397k in May 2023 and 207k in June 2022.

  • For deliveries, there were 141 commercial aircraft delivered in June 2023, representing a month-on-month and year-on-year variance of +15% and +23% respectively.

  • June saw the highest number of new generation narrowbody deliveries this year, with 102 aircraft shared between the neo and MAX.

  • During the first half of 2023, Airbus A320neo deliveries averaged at 45 per month, compared to 35 per month for the Boeing 737 MAX.
