Allegiant Air's Boeing 737 MAX order signifies a shift to modernity for the carrier's fleet.

Allegiant Travel has announced an order for 50 Boeing 737 Max aircraft, with the option to take a further 50 jets. Deliveries of are expected to begin in 2023. The operator has opted for the Boeing 737 Max 7 and Boeing 737 Max 8-200 aircraft,
The order is an overdue win for Boeing, who have seen several legacy customers opt to switch to Airbus products for their short haul fleets in the past few months (such as recent A320 family orders from Qantas and KLM).
Allegiant Air has traditionally chosen to operate older aircraft, with the average age of the fleet being 14.9 years, 1.5 years older than the market average age of aircraft. The fleet is made up of a mix of Airbus A320-200 and Airbus A319-100 aircraft.
With this order, Allegiant Air becomes another operator of the higher density Boeing 737 Max 8-200, which can carry up to 197 passengers.
According to aircraft orders data from IBA's aviation intelligence platform InsightIQ, there are 337 Boeing 737 Max 8-200 on order as of 06 January 2022. The largest operator of the type is Ryanair, who at present have 41 aircraft in service, with a further 167 in production.
