IBA’s  Aviation Barometer highlights the key trends in global aviation industry as revealed by IBA Insight, the ultimate aviation intelligence platform.

What happened in November 2023?

  • Monthly global passenger capacity recovery remains stable at 99% of pre-pandemic ASKs in November 2023, the same level seen during October 2023.

 

  • In November, all markets apart from Europe and Asia Pacific were trending at or above pre-pandamic capacity.

 

  • Assessing the current trend, IBA expect global passenger ASKs to surpass 2019 levels by December 2023.

 

  • Overall, there were approximately 2.63 million commercial passenger flights in November 2023, compared to 2.90 million in October 2023, while 2.21 million flights were recorded in November 2022.

 

  • There were 121 commercial aircraft deliveries in November 2023, representing a MoM and YoY variance of +8% and -5% respectively.

 

  • So far during 2023, Airbus A320neo deliveries have averaged 46/month, compared to Boeing's 737 MAX at 31/month.

What happened in October 2023?

  • Monthly global passenger capacity edges closer to a full recovery, reaching 99% of pre-pandemic ASKs in October 2023, a gain of +1% compared to September 2023.

 

  • In October, all markets apart from Europe and Asia Pacific were trending at or above pre-pandamic capacity.

 

  • Assessing the current trend, IBA expect global passenger ASKs to surpass 2019 levels by November 2023.

 

  • Overall, there were approximately 2.90 million commercial passenger flights in October 2023, compared to 2.88 million in September 2023, while 2.42 million flights were recorded in October 2022.

 

  • There were 103 commercial aircraft deliveries in October 2023, representing a MoM and YoY variance of 8% and 1% respectively.

 

  • So far during 2023, Airbus A320neo deliveries have averaged 45/month, compared to Boeing's 737 MAX at 30/month.

What happened in September 2023?

  • Monthly global passenger capacity edges closer to a full recovery, reaching 99% of pre-pandemic ASKs in September 2023, a gain of 1% compared to August 2023.

 

  • In September, all markets apart from Europe and Asia Pacific were trending at or above pre-pandemic capacity. IBA continue to expect global passenger ASKs to surpass 2019 levels by October 2023.

 

  • Passenger ASKs from Chinese operators were trending 3% below 2019 levels during September, a slight regress from August where ASKs exceeded pre-pandemic volumes.

 

  • 434,000 commercial passenger flights were recorded by Chinese operators in September 2023, compared to 490,000 in August 2023 and 191,000 in September 2022.

 

  • Overall, there were approximately 88 million commercial passenger flights in September 2023, compared to 3.08 million in August 2023, while 2.42 million flights were recorded in September 2022.

 

  • Whilst there was a fall in commercial aircraft deliveries in September 2023, so far during 2023, Airbus A320neo deliveries have averaged 45 per month, compared to Boeing's 737 MAX at 31 per month.

What happened in July 2023?

  • Monthly global passenger capacity edges closer to a full recovery, reaching 97% of pre-pandemic ASKs in July 2023, a gain of +2% compared to June 2023.

 

  • Operators from Africa, North America, Latin America and the Middle East surpassed pre-pandemic capacity, while operators in APAC and Europe continue to lag slightly behind.

 

  • In APAC, operator capacity has now surpassed 90% of pre-pandemic levels, supported by a strong July within the Chinese market.

 

  • Assessing the current trend, IBA expects global passenger ASKs to surpass 2019 levels by October 2023.

 

  • There were approximately 3.04 million commercial passenger flights, compared to 2.82 million in June 2023, while 2.64 million flights were recorded in July 2022.

 

  • Chinese operators recorded 451k commercial passenger flights in July 2023, compared to 388k in June 2023 and 296k in June 2022.

 

  • There were 110 commercial aircraft deliveries in July 2023, representing a month-on-month and year-on-year variance of -24% and +34% respectively.

 

  • So far during 2023, Airbus A320neo deliveries have averaged 45 per month, compared to Boeing's 737 MAX at 35 per month.

What happened in June 2o23?

  • Monthly global passenger capacity reached 95% of pre-pandemic ASKs in June 2023, a fall of -1% compared to May 2023.

 

  • Operators from Africa, as well as North & Latin America surpassed pre-pandamic capacity, while operators In APAC, Europe and the Middle East lag slightly behind.

 

  • Assessing the current trend, IBA expects global passenger ASKs to surpass 2019 levels by October 2023.

 

  • Overall, there were approximately 2.82 million commercial passenger flights in June 2023, compared to 2.81 million in May 2023.

 

  • There were 141 commercial aircraft deliveries in June 2023, representing a MoM and YoY variance of +15% and +23% respectively.

 

  • June saw the highest number of new-generation narrowbody delivieries this year, with 102 aircraft shared between the neo and MAX.

 

  • During H1-2023, Airbus A320neo deliveries have averaged 45/month, compared to Boeing's 737 MAX at 35/month.

 

  • Passenger ASKs from Chinese operators are trending at 89% of 2019 levels, a steady increase from 82% at the end of Q1-2023.

 

  • There 388k commercial passenger flights were recorded by Chinese operators, compared to 397k in May 2023 and 207k in June 2022.

What happened in May 2o23?

  • Monthly global passenger capacity reached 96% of pre-pandemic ASKs in May 2023, an improvement of +1% compared to April 2023.

 

  • If current trends continue, IBA expects global passenger ASKs to surpass 2019 levels by July 2023.

 

  • There were approximately 2.81 million commercial passenger flights in May 2023, compared to 2.31 million flights in May 2022.

 

  • There were 123 commercial aircraft deliveries in May 2023, representing a MoM and YoY variance of +34% and +41% respectively.

 

  • As of May 2023, passenger ASKs from Chinese operators are trending at 87% of 2019 levels - a strong improvement from 44% in December 2022.

What happened in April 2023?

  • Monthly global passenger capacity reached 95% of pre-pandemic ASKs in April 2023, an improvement of +3% compared to March 2023.

 

  • If current trends continue, IBA expects global passenger ASKs to surpass 2019 levels by July 2023.

 

  • There were approximately 2.66 million commercial passenger flights in April 2023, compared to 2.08 million flights in April 2022.

 

  • There were 83 commercial aircraft deliveries in April 2023, representing a MoM and YoY variance of -34% and +12% respectively.
