US Airlines Record Strong Increase In Capacity Boosted By The Holiday Season

If we consider flights by region, the chart below demonstrates the positive news that US airlines recorded an increase in capacity over the holiday season. This small but notable uplift in domestic traffic was boosted by family reunions and holiday traffic. The Top 4 operators during the week of 28th Dec to 3rd Jan (in terms of number of flights) were all American carriers, including the regional operator SkyWest who recorded over 13,000 flights. According to data from the US Transportation Security Administration, approximately 1.3 million people passed through U.S. airport checkpoints on 3rd Jan 2021, the most since mid-March 2020.

 

In contrast to North America, we observed a decline in the number of flights in Asia Pacific and all other geographical regions during this 3-week holiday period as illustrated above. The spread of the novel Coronavirus variant has resulted in some stricter lockdown measures for some regions and more travel restrictions.

 

Looking in more detail at Europe, Russia recorded the highest number of flights with over 11,000 sectors and recorded the region's highest growth rate over the 3 week period. The Irish carrier Ryanair was the first European operator to record over 4,000 flights in one week.
