Which full service airlines have the most aircraft orders?

Airline fleet data from IBA's InsightIQ aviation intelligence platform reveals the top 5 full-service airlines by aircraft orders, showcasing fleet renewal strategies.

1. United Airlines - 538 aircraft orders

An analysis of commercial aircraft orders using IBA's InsightIQ has identified United Airlines as the most active full-service carrier globally in terms of fleet renewal. As of early March 2022, the carrier has a total of 538 aircraft orders. These comprise of 366 Boeing 737 MAX family aircraft, 120 Airbus A320 family aircraft, 7 x Boeing 787 aircraft and 45 Airbus A350 aircraft. These aircraft will join the existing fleet of 867 aircraft in service at United. The most common types in the fleet are the Boeing 737-800 and Boeing 737-900ER, with 140 and 136 aircraft in service respectively. The average age of the United Airlines fleet is 16.9 years.

 

2. Delta Air Lines - 231 aircraft orders

Another one of the US 'Big Four' carriers (also one of the largest carriers globally), Delta Air Lines had 231 aircraft on order as of early March 2022. Our recent analysis focussed on fleet renewal and SAF implementation at airlines including Delta, examining if US carriers could expand fleets whilst controlling CO2 emissions. The bulk of these orders is for 155 Airbus A320 family aircraft, with additional orders for A220, A330 and A350 aircraft.

 

3. Emirates - 199 aircraft orders

59.8% of Emirate's total orders are for Boeing 777 family aircraft, with the remainder being for Boeing 787 and A350 aircraft. The most common aircraft in the Emirates in-service fleet are the Boeing 777-300ER and Airbus A380-800. Emirates has an average in-service fleet age of 8.5 years, 4.9 years below the market average age.

 

4. American Airlines - 187 aircraft orders

American Airlines had active orders for 187 aircraft as of early March 2022. 43% of these are for Boeing 737 MAX family aircraft, joined by orders for A320, 787 and E-Jet family aircraft. Alongside American Airlines' healthy orderbook, mass retirements of older types including the McDonnell Douglas MD-80, Embraer E190 and Boeing 767 and 737-800 continue, and a blend of Airbus A321-200 and Boeing 757-200 aircraft are being placed into long term storage.

 

5. Lufthansa - 152 aircraft orders

German flag carrier Lufthansa's orderbook comprised of 82 Airbus A320 family aircraft, 28 Airbus A350 family aircraft, 25 Boeing 787 aircraft and 17 Boeing 777 family aircraft as of early March 2022. The A320-200 forms the mainstay of the Lufthansa in service fleet, with 56 aircraft in service as of 08 March 2022*.
