In partnership with KPMG, IBA will now publish a monthly index of overall aviation industry carbon efficiency, spotlighting aircraft types, airlines, and lessors, and accompanied by an analysis of related trends. With data points from the start of 2018, the IBA Aviation Carbon Emissions Index showcases the industry's efforts and success at improving the efficiency of their fleets. It reveals an overall year-on-year reduction of 5.2% on a rolling three-month basis over the last four years.

What are the benefits of the Carbon Emissions Index?

Combined with our Carbon Emissions Calculator, our aviation Carbon Emissions Index provides a unique, stable and reliable platform for meeting environmental social governance requirements ('ESG' requirements). Using the Carbon Emissions Index, subscribers can accurately benchmark and track the most efficient airlines and fleet operations. Comparing carbon emissions to-date helps airlines, banks, lessors and investors to understand who is operating the most efficient fleet on a per-seat per-mile basis. As a subscriber, you can:

  • Benchmark fleets and portfolios against the index on a monthly or periodic basis to see how they perform and where they rank
  • Compare and contrast figures against the index on a country by country or regional basis, giving you an understanding of the index to which airlines and aircraft contribute
  • Empower consumers to make personal or corporate travel plans based on accurate and comparable emissions figures
  • Access a unique, powerful and simple tool that helps you meet ESG requirements

How does the IBA Carbon Emissions Index work?

IBA's aviation Carbon Emissions Index works using a combination of big data methodologies, advanced analytics techniques, an iterative algorithmic approach. This is combined with the expertise of IBA's 50 strong team of analysts and researchers. This innovative and unique index provides a new and unparalleled depth to aviation carbon analysis. We track the monthly emissions efficiency of the global commercial aircraft fleet based on 'grams of CO2 per Available Seat Mile' (ASM), a metric that adds meaningful context to our conclusions.

How accurate is the IBA Carbon Emissions Index?

Our index compares results to the published sustainability reports and Scope 1 carbon emissions of over 50 global airlines. The result is Scope 1 emissions figures that match airlines' own reporting at more than 99% accuracy. The index is part of our Carbon Emissions Calculator 'CEC'. We recently performed a direct comparison between the CEC and Wizz Air emissions data, and proved a high level of accuracy between the results.

"We all know decarbonisation in aviation is topical - but this index now allows the conversation to progress beyond generalisations and into specific, transparent benchmarking across industry players."

Chris Brown, Partner, Aviation Strategy, KPMG.

InsightIQ's Carbon Emissions Calculator (CEC) is the only finance-focused carbon modelling tool currently available; it's leading the way. The CEC benefits from IBA's proprietary fuel-burn data which, integrated with InsightIQ's Flights and Fleets module, can illustrate carbon emissions by any combination of: time period, airline, lessor, aircraft MSN and model, portfolio, OEM, country, airport and route pair.
